The Chennai police is probing into an allegation that an inspector attached to a police station in the city had recently forced a man to register his property in favour a third person at gun-point.

“A central crime branch (CCB) team is probing the allegation. We will take action on the basis of the finding of the CCB team,” said a senior officer.

David John, who complained of police high handedness, alleged that he was taken from the city police commissioner’s office on December 23 in an official jeep by the inspector who threatened him with a gun and asked him to register his duplex house in Adyar to a person known to the proprietor of a construction firm.

“The inspector said that he would not hesitate to shoot me because he had registered an FIR against me. On Friday, Dec. 23, by the time the inspector and his team took me to the Adyar sub-registrar office, it was too late. so the forceful registration was carried out next day,” John said in his complaint.

However, the police officer concerned claimed that he had not threatened anybody with a gun. “We are not allowed to flash our guns just like that. We can’t take the weapon whenever and wherever we want,” he said.

The police officer, however, acknowledged that he took John from the commissioner’s office where the latter had gone to give a statement in connection with a case of his property being grabbed.

The inspector also said that he had registered an FIR against John in connection with another complaint about the same property.
